The Bird's Nest

Oh, um, hello. Sorry, I didn't realize anyone was coming over today. It's a bit of a mess, but hopefully you don't mind that. Please make yourself at home!

There's no point to this website. It's not a blog or a portfolio and I'm not trying to win any social media numbers game. There's no theme and no schedule. I've just been collecting things for a while. All kinds of things really. Things I've made. Things I've found. Thoughts and feelings. They probably aren't important, but I have them so I needed somewhere to keep them organized.

The website is is actually a mess right now. I trashed the old version of the website because reasons™ and am rebuilding it from scratch. It'll take a while to get everything moved over and settled into their new homes.

Coding projects

Sometimes I make toys and games! I've been coding since before I learned to read. That's a less impressive if you know how late I learned to read. I started off coaxing QuickBASIC to make very simple games. Later, I moved on to Game Maker, but eventually became frustrated by its limitations. I believe it's a lot more powerful these days, but I haven't gone back to see. Currently, my tools of choice are Godot when I want some power and raw HTML/CSS/JavaScript when I want to suffer.

Music!

Sometimes I make music! I got into music in my teen years, starting off learning piano, highland bagpipes, and barbershop singing. Since then, I've dabbled in a bit of percussion, violin, and tin whistle. My main instrument recently has been the ocarina. I have only a few good recordings of myself playing music, but I've been trying to make some higher quality recordings recently.

Art

Sometimes I make art! I've never considered myself a visual artist. I tried learning to sketch and draw several times during my youth, but was always frustrated with the results. I know everyone starts out inexperienced and that skilled artists get good by spending thousands of hours practicing, but I could tell I was making almost no progress compared to other kids who were putting in no more time than I was. I've made some progress since then, but still usually have to resort to tracing to get basic shapes and proportions correct and it takes me a very long time to finish anything. I don't do commissions because it would not be possible for me to charge a rate that would give good value for money while also giving me a reasonable amount for the time I'd need to take.

Who am I?

I'm Piper, by the way. I'm not consistently active on any social media. I do hang out on Mastodon a bit, but I mainly just boost things other people are saying. I used to stream more on my Twitch, but I haven't been active there for a while now.
